Sandy Springs, Georgia, May 1, 2015 (Newswire.com) - Signature Bank of Georgia team members joined forces on April 25th to participate in “For a Better Sandy Springs,” a volunteer effort coordinated by Leadership Sandy Springs.
Led by Signature Bank Market President Augustus Brown and Volunteer Coordinator Mary Ladd, many of the bank team members gathered to help fight invasive species growth along a stretch of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area.
"Our main focus was clearing the English Ivy," said Ladd. "It invades the woodlands and the vines can grow to 100 ft. in length. The ivy grows both along the ground, where it can displace native understory species, and in the tree canopy, often covering branches and slowly killing trees. We had our work cut out for us."

The event began at 8 a.m. at North Springs High School with a kickoff breakfast and remarks from Sandy Springs mayor Rusty Paul. Thereafter, various volunteer groups met up to begin the day’s work.
“Our main focus was clearing the English Ivy,” said Ladd. “It invades the woodlands and the vines can grow to 100 ft. in length. The ivy grows both along the ground, where it can displace native understory species, and in the tree canopy, often covering branches and slowly killing trees. We had our work cut out for us.”
After the clean-up, team members accompanied a forest ranger for a trail hike and nature information session.
“Taking back the green space in our community is a big deal,” said Brown. “The Chattahoochee River NRA is home to an amazing 948 plant species, 813 of which are native. It’s the other 145 we need to eradicate – in order to preserve the diversity.”
